Paths to love

In the project of a garden, large or small, one cannot underestimate the presence of paths that, depending on the shape or color, will make the available green space more precious and evocative. A driveway, a pleasant border around the house, a path that gets lost in the lawn, a path that leads to the various corners of the garden: whatever the use of the avenue, it is still a great way to define the spaces and it can be perfumed in spring (by planting borders of roses or fragrant flowers), cool in summer (for example, surmounting it with arches covered with climbing greens) and colored in autumn (choosing to sow plants along this path that this season take on suggestive nuances).
The dynamic and choreographic effects will be different depending on whether you choose a straight or a curvilinear path, paved or cobbled, isolated or surrounded by bushes and flowers. By creating unusual geometries, intertwining paths, surrounding them with color, you can create highly effective situations.
Thanks to an original idea, therefore, even the simplest garden can be redesigned and transformed into a charming corner, where the paths wind their way towards the entrance of the house, branch off in the direction of a romantic gazebo or a pergola in flower, giving a touch of class to outdoor spaces of any size.

Great importance in the design of the paths will be the choice of materials, the style of the path and the correct use of lighting.
A terracotta path (the most popular, for simplicity and versatility) will be perfectly integrated with the natural context in which it develops and will give a touch of warm and natural color to the garden.
Brick floors are perhaps the most flexible in creating a path: they can be combined in multiple geometries to form unusual paths, laying bricks as a fishbone, a knife to strengthen the pavement, alternate courses or inventing new designs according to own taste and imagination. A beautiful rustic effect is given by the driveways in solid wood rods.
The paths made with clinker and concrete blocks are also pleasing to the eye, while natural stone paths may be preferred for a refined garden (the most commonly used are beola, particularly suitable for walkways, and porphyry). The stone pavement, to be honest, is well suited to any type of garden, even to the one that is more "problematic" due to its conformation, type of terrain, layout: using split stones, slate slabs or gravel tiles, laid according to a more or less casual design, flush with the ground, and leaving space and fissures between one and the other in which the grass can grow, a pleasant and very natural effect is obtained.

Types of avenues

Each garden will lend itself to the creation of paths according to the needs of use: it will be possible to build driveways, to allow the transit of cars and motorcycles to the garage or uncovered parking lot; you can design a cheerful and welcoming path up to the front door (perhaps paved with mosaic-effect tiles and bounded by round and irregular stones) or you can create paths that are lost in the grass, harmonizing with the surrounding environment.
Depending on the function of the driveway, there will be different ways of laying.
To create paths and main walkways, it will be advisable to reinforce the soil with a layer of massif, that is a mixture of crushed stone and gravel, compressed so as to obtain a smooth and resistant surface; in the case of a secondary driveway (with a reduced and occasional passage) it will be sufficient to add a layer of simple sand to the ground. In any case, the finished floor must be at the level of the surrounding ground.

Flowers and plants

A fundamental role, after choosing the material, the shape and the intended use of the driveway, will be that of plants and flowers that, step by step, will accompany us along the path between scents and colors in every season.
Although the path may be short (in the case of smaller gardens, for example), it will still have to create the atmosphere and integrate with the environment: it will be secret and hidden, or ample and comfortable; it will have a formal aspect if the vegetation will be arranged in an orderly manner or will make the passage more lively if immersed in a chaotic alternation of colors.
Thanks to the arrangement of the flowers along the paths, therefore, our garden will be romantic, naive or refined, depending on the personal taste and style of the house.

Garden driveway: Lighting

The final touch in enhancing the paths will be light.
Lighting, if done artfully, creates suggestion and makes a garden beautiful even at night.
You will be able to place spotlights below, following the winding of the path, obtaining fascinating plays of light and shadows, while some lamppost scattered here and there in the garden, with the light that barely touches the path, will give life to a suggestive scenographic effect. Traditional lighting can be used, but solar-powered lamps and torches (especially in the summer) will give a more romantic and ecological touch to the illuminated path.
