But how do lily-of-the-valley flowers grow? They prefer a soft, sandy soil rich in nutrients, in a sunny position. Watering must be abundant, especially in the vegetative period, while it must be suspended during the winter. From the practical point of view, with i lily-of-the-valley flowers fantastic decorations can be made, delicious and delicate, ideal, for example, for a wedding party. In fact, even thanks to their small size, they are perfect for creating compositions for a centerpiece, or for creating inexpensive, romantic but aesthetically pleasing bouquets. If bought out of season they prove to be very expensive: for this reason it is advisable to grow them at home, and then combine them, perhaps, with tulips and white roses. Moreover, in addition to the lily-of-the-valley flowers, small twigs can also be used, for example for a lunch or a special dinner: arranged on a paper napkin in the center of the plate, they turn into a curious place marker, tied to a card that shows the name of the guest. Also in the kitchen you can use lily-of-the-valley flowers, naturally only as a decoration and not in the food sector: they can be used as an ornament for a special cake, for example. There are, however, different varieties. The Transcaucasian convallaria, for example, is native to the Caspian Sea, and is noted for the large size of the flowers, with a rather elongated shape, of ivory or pale pink color; convallaria majuscola, on the other hand, comes from the United States, and in particular from the south-eastern area: it is a variety similar to the European lily of the valley, but the floral scape, in addition to being covered with leaves, is shorter. The convallaria majalis dorien, whose flowers are quite large, can even reach thirty centimeters; the inflorescences of the convallaria majalis prolificans are much smaller, numerous and cream-white in color. The perfume obtained from lily-of-the-valley flowers, as mentioned, is used in cosmetics for the realization of deodorants, oils, lotions and creams. Known for their diuretic and cardiotonic properties, they can also be used to make an inexpensive home colony, which is obtained by soaking a solution of glycerine and alcohol (a quarter of glycerine and three quarters of alcohol) inside, a dozen flowers of thrush for at least two weeks. Once this period is over, the liquid must be filtered and stored in a small ampoule: it can be used to perfume linen or deodorize cabinets and rooms.
