Radish (from Lat. - "root") is considered the first spring vegetable, since there is no more early maturing root vegetable than radish. But for its flowering and ripening of fruits, a long daylight is needed, otherwise an arrow with seeds will not be able to form.

Secrets of planting and caring for radishes

Planting and care of such an unpretentious vegetable as a radish can be carried out under a film, or in the open field. You can harvest from one garden bed 3-4 times a season.

Radish is considered a cold-resistant plant, capable of withstanding 5-6 degrees of frost, but the most suitable temperature would be 17-20 degrees.

Any gardener can face such a problem when the radish goes to the arrow, then blooms, and as a result, the roots do not appear. To avoid this, it is necessary to avoid a high density of sowing, dry soil and low temperatures. It is not necessary to apply fresh manure for sowing, since the leaves can grow, and the roots will turn out to be hollow.

Gardeners who want to get a good harvest should know initially in what soil and how to plant radishes. It's not for nothing that the proverb says: as you sow, so will you reap.

  • First, choose fertile soil in a sunny location for early sowing or shaded areas in the middle of summer.
  • Secondly, it is advisable to soak the seeds for 12 hours before sowing.
  • Thirdly, the garden must be prepared in advance. In the open ground, it must be done in mid-April: pour hot water, dig it to the depth of a shovel, add about 3 kg of humus, add 1 tbsp. spoon nitrophosphate, dig up again with a pitchfork 11-12 cm deep, then level and compact a little. Make grooves to a depth of about 2.5-3 cm and at a distance of 8-10 cm, then pour water at 33-35 degrees and start sowing. Seeds are sown into grooves at a distance of 2.5-3 cm from each other to a depth of 2 cm. It is not worth sowing deeper, as the fruits may not set. If sowing early, you need to cover it with foil to a height of about 50 cm from the garden.
  • Fourth, it is better to plant radishes in spring or in the second half of summer: April 16-27, May 10-11 and 22-24, August 1-10.

When the radish planting is complete, you need to wait for the shoots. Five days after their emergence, the seedlings must be thinned out by removing weak plants. Radish requires irrigation by sprinkling (at home - from a watering can). When the bed is weathered, loosening must be done.

In order to combat cruciferous flea beetles and cabbage flies, dry mustard or pepper can be poured between the rows before loosening in a ratio of 1 sq. meter one teaspoon. In the process of growing radish, the method of pollination of its leaves with ash or tobacco dust helps. If the plant affects the keel, as a result of which growths are formed on the roots, such fruits must be immediately destroyed, and no more radishes should be planted in their place.

Watering the beds at the beginning of radish growth should be done in small doses, but more often. Watering reduces the fruits to a moderate size, otherwise, only the tops will grow, the fruit in this case does not form, or it turns out to be empty.

You should know that if the radish subsequently tastes bitter and tough, then it was watered badly, and if it cracked, then it was watered a lot, in excess.

In 20-25 days the radish ripens. If it grows very slowly, while its leaves are pale green, it is necessary to "feed" the vegetable: 1 teaspoon of crystallin, urea, or GROWTH, dilute in 10 liters of water. Such a solution should be 3.5-4 liters per 1 square meter. Stir it well and water the beds.

Now it is important not to miss the moment of harvesting radishes, since you cannot be late with it. If the moment is missed, the fruits become coarse, and the radish goes to the arrow. Root crops that have already ripened must be dug up, the tops must be cut off and the vegetables must be put in plastic bags. It is recommended to store at a temperature of 2-3 degrees.
