Ornamental onions: planting, growing, care features

Decorative bow (alium or allium) is a decoration for any garden. Thanks to this unsurpassed plant, you can make a garden of continuous flowering.

And it is very simple to do this: it is enough to plant varieties with different flowering times on the flower bed. And when the inflorescences begin to fade, you should not despair, because the dry color heads of decorative onions look very impressive.

Plant appearance

Today, more than 600 types of decorative bow are known. The varieties differ from each other another shape and size of inflorescences, color, variability of flowering, as well as the structure of leaves and flowers.

Alium comes from the onion family. Because of this relationship, ornamental onions have a "garlic" smell and a pungent taste. It is caused by the presence of essential oils.

Ornamental onions are characterized by linear leaves that grow from the root.

This bow has become decorative thanks to its delicate inflorescences, which consist of small pretty flowers.

Different varieties of inflorescences can be of different sizes, it happens that the diameter of the flower head reaches 30 cm.Onion flowers can be of very different colors.

Reproduction of decorative onions

This plant reproduces both by seeds and vegetatively (by bulbs). Each of the methods has its positive and negative sides.

Consider seed propagation. They are best sown in spring or fall. For diving seedlings, beds with good lighting are chosen. And here it is already worth paying attention to two main points. The seeds of many onion varieties will sprout only with podzimnuyu sowing, because they need to go through the whole range of differences in the autumn-winter-spring season.

Sometimes even long-term storage of seeds in the refrigerator cannot replace such a need. And the second important point - when sowing seeds, some types of onions will bloom only for 3-8 years, when the bulb reaches the desired size.

Vegetative propagation occurs when the bulb is divided. As a result of division, small baby bulbs appear, which develop near the mother's bulb. The education of children also depends on the type of decorative onion. In some plant species, small bulbs form on the inflorescences. They can also be used for breeding.

Alium's landing

If you decide to sow seeds, then choose only developed seed pods, from the underdeveloped you will get a pale, diseased plant.

If you want to plant baby bulbs, then they must be buried at a depth of two diameters of the bulb itself. We must also remember that there must be a distance of at least 30 cm between the plants. By the way, you should not interfere with the growing season, the greenery of the alium itself will decide when it is better for it to die off.

The Potentilla plant will be a beautiful and useful decoration for any garden.

Choosing a place for disembarkation

For ornamental onions, it is best to choose a sunny bed with loose, fertile soils. With better illumination, the color intensity of flowers and leaves will increase.

Before planting onions, the soil is fertilized with rotted compost and mineral fertilizer with trace elements.

Ornamental onions do not tolerate a lack of potassium in the soil very badly. To remedy the situation, wood ash can be added to the soil.

Ornamental bow care

Alium is a rather unpretentious plant. It is able to survive slight droughts and light frosts. One of the needs of onions is moisture. But here you need to be careful: if the soil is not loose enough and the water stagnates, then rotting of the bulbs is possible.

And the optimal amount of moisture at the beginning of the growing season contributes to the better formation of leaves and flowering shoots. If there is a moisture deficit, the growth of the leaves stops until the next watering.

If the second half of summer is damp and cool, then the likelihood of disease and decay increases. Therefore, experienced gardeners are advised to dig up the bulbs after flowering, dry and store in a dry place until autumn (this is only for bulbous plants).

Somewhere in the third decade of September, they must be landed again. Onion root growth will continue after planting until the temperature drops to 2-3 degrees.

Some varieties of this plant do not care when they are planted - in autumn or spring, but the bulbs should overwinter in a cool, dry place. But the bulbous-rhizome varieties of onions are reluctant to transplant, so they are transplanted in 3-5 years only once.

Every spring, it is necessary to deeply loosen the area, clean it of plant residues. During the growing season, care should be like for any plant: weeding, loosening and mulching the soil. It is imperative to feed it twice - after the regrowth of the leaves (in spring) and during the budding period (at the end of summer).
