Question: sowing tomatoes

I have sown the tomatoes that I hope to eat this summer but I have some problems ... the seeds have germinated very quickly but after about 10 days the seedling with the two cotyledons "collapses" on itself and in a few hours dies.
the plants are at home at a temperature of about 20 degrees exposed to the sun as much as possible. what can I do to save the remaining plants? thanks!

Plant sowing is a fun and enjoyable practice, which allows us to obtain new plants without a large economic outlay. To be able to sow effectively, it is however necessary to know a little better the plants that we are going to sow; consider that in nature tomatoes germinate outdoors, in early spring.
So in order to develop your plants they need a cool climate, with minimum temperatures around 12-15 ° C, and practically equal maximums; they love well-lit positions, even sunny ones if they have good humidity; they need the humidity that characterizes the garden in spring.
So usually tomato seedlings are prepared in a greenhouse or in a slightly heated seedbed, but not in an apartment, where the climate is too hot and extremely dry.
Your plants are certainly suffering from the very dry air present, you can try to save them by vaporizing them often, but avoiding to keep the soil of the seedbed always soaked with water. So water it only when the ground tends to dry but a couple of times a day vpaorizzale with a nebulizer.
If you have any seeds left, try repeating the sowing in a protected place, but outdoors, when the minimum temperatures are above 10 ° C.

Tomato sowing is a simple and affordable practice for everyone. At nurseries it is possible to buy seedlings already ready for planting; sometimes, however, we wish to produce them independently. The reasons can be many: if we have a large extension to cover we will have a great economic saving. Moreover we will be able to choose ancient varieties or with particular characteristics, whose seeds are easily available by correspondence. It is also undeniable that it is a great satisfaction to be responsible for our crops from birth to harvesting the fruit.

Sowing period

The tomato can be sown in a seedbed, covered, or directly in the ground. Almost throughout Italy the first option is the preferred one as it allows to anticipate the cultivation and, due to the slow growth varieties, to be able to finish the vegetative cycle before the arrival of the cold. The first jars can be prepared already in February-March.
Sowing in the open field should be considered if we live in the southern regions or if we want to obtain germination in May / June for areas that will be covered by greenhouses when autumn arrives.
The time window in which to carry out this last processing goes from April (South) to June (Center-North).

Ideal conditions for germination

Tomato germination is not difficult, if there is light, heat and humidity.
The minimum required temperature is 15 ° C, although it would be better to stay around 18 ° C. In a very bright environment we will see the plant tick over a week. Let us remember to leave the seed rather shallow (the ideal depth is about 5 mm).
A common practice to promote birth is immersion: the seeds are left for about 2-3 hours in cold water, and then moved for as many hours in warm water. Sowing will take place 1-2 days after extraction from the water.

Sow tomatoes in seedbeds

We can choose whether to proceed using alveolar trays (very comfortable when we need to carry out the transplant) or in boxes (from which we will then have to move the plants into individual jars).
Container preparation It is very important, given the humidity that we will need for germination, to maintain maximum hygiene in order to avoid the growth of mold. We wash the containers with a solution obtained with water and bleach, in the proportion of 10: 1.
Substrate we can choose whether to buy a specific product for sowing (to still lighten it slightly with sand) or to prepare it personally. The soil suitable for this use must be soft and the texture as regular as possible. It must also remain moist for a long time, but without creating stagnation.
The ideal compound is composed of 1/3 of mature compost, 1/3 of garden soil and 1/3 of coarse sand.
Before use we will have to sift through carefully to eliminate the larger parts. It is also highly recommended sterilization: everything is closed in an aluminum foil and put in the oven at 150 ° C for at least half an hour.

Sowing in alveolar trays

Trays with square cells of about 4 cm side are chosen. Place a draining layer on the bottom and cover with the prepared soil. In each alveolus two seeds are placed and covered with soil mixed with agriperlite. We lightly steam the surface and dip the jars in a bowl with about 3 cm of water for about 10 minutes. We then repeat regularly to keep wet. At the appearance of the seedlings we will perform the thinning, leaving only one per alveolus (we can try to re-stick them).

Sowing in trays or cassettes

Let's proceed in the same way. We can then decide whether to distribute the seeds on a broad strip or in rows about 5 cm apart. We humidify with a vaporizer and irrigate by immersion. Once germination has taken place, the most vigorous seedlings will be spiked in individual jars of about 5 cm per side.

Advice for sowing tomatoes

To get results quickly it is important that temperatures are constant, high and there is plenty of light. The advice is to place the jars on a windowsill (above a radiator) very well exposed. Alternatively we can buy a heating pad with resistance, specific for lockers.
Let us also remember to cover the containers with transparent plastic so that the humidity remains high, but we ventilate at least once a day. We leave the jars open when we see the leaflets appear.

Sowing in the open field

It is generally sown in rows, with 3 seeds postarelle. The distance on the row goes from 30 to 60 cm depending on the variety, the distance between the rows is instead of 70-120 cm.
We proceed only when the minimum temperatures have settled at 15 ° C. The seeds should be left rather superficial and moistened very gently, at least twice a day. Useful to promote birth is to cover the area with non-woven fabric that, in addition to accumulating heat, will protect from falling temperatures during the night. It is advisable to prepare the supports immediately so as not to move the soil later, with the risk of damaging the roots.
