Hybrid verbena features

The hybrid verbena plant has specific characteristics.
First of all, they have small, rough and slightly leathery leaves, opposite alternate, more or less toothed, hairy and rough to the touch. They also develop on thin herbaceous stems that tend to turn into growth, into real groundcover. The flowers are corimbiform terminal spikes of various vivid colors. Flowering occurs in summer, from spring to autumn. The soil they prefer for optimal development is light, with an organic, well-drained substance. As far as exposure is concerned, hybrid verdenas grow best in sunny areas. Many times, the verbenas are grown in pots. This is to be able to place the plants in places where sunlight comes directly on the branches of the plants.

Grandiflora hybrid

Verbena grandiflora is a rustic species, particularly cultivated and loved for its ability to embellish and enrich gardens, flower beds, planters. It is in fact an ornamental plant with an open and rather bushy habit. It belongs to the Verbenacee family, has an annual life cycle and at the time of flowering, shows its small colorful flowers, with an intense aroma and gathered in round apical inflorescences. It is a plant with abundant flowering that can reach 30-40 cm in height. Among the most famous grandiflora species we remember Ellen Willmott with white salmon pink flowers in the middle, Mammoth Mixed and Mixed Royal Bouquet with flowers of various colors.
The sowing of these species takes place from January to May while flowering from May to October.

Compacta hybrid

The Compacta species includes varieties 20 - 30 cm high, including: Blue Amethiyst with violet flowers; Blaze with crimson flowers; Sparcle Hybrids with flowers of various colors, delight with pink bloom, floral with red petals, laurence johnston with cherry flowers. We also recall a further variety called Italian verbena. This, of great visual impact for its evocative coloration, appears striated longitudinally and with shades of red, pink and blue. On the same plant, it can show more flowers with different colors. This particularity makes it unique in its kind.
The compacta are very ornamental plants that can reach from 15 to 40 cm. Although they are grown as annuals they are actually perennials. The compacta species includes hybrid plants that are particularly suitable as ground cover, due to their short stature.

it occurs mainly by seed. For cutting or layering, on the other hand, the plants whose colors are desired are reproduced.
The reproduction by seed is carried out in February in the cassone or in March-April in the open. The seedlings are left to root for about twenty days and then transplanted into the plantation. When they hint at flowering they can be transplanted in a flowerbed or in a vase, distancing them by 25 cm.
Germinate the seeds in a greenhouse, plant in May.

Hybrid verbena: cultivation techniques

They love well-fertilized soils with a strong presence of organic matter. The exposure required by these plants is sunny or semi-sunny. To obtain more compact plants it is preferable to make apical topping. The verbenas can withstand even winter temperatures, having the foresight to place them in sheltered places, and cover them with straw and non-woven fabric. Irrigation for these plants is very important, they hate water stagnation, but they want the soil to be well moist. When the earth is dry, bathe thoroughly.
The hybrid verbena plants are used for the formation of borders and small tanks. Larger varieties are also used as shrubby plants.
